Nursing Care

Common among individuals who have a developmental disability are physical or health challenges. Providing the proper level of support for each individual's overall health is central to the core values and principles of the employees of Michael Dunn Center. Our commitment to striving for the optimal health status for each individual served is demonstrated by the Nursing Department. With a staff of 35 nurses and 35 unlicensed direct service professionals, the nursing Department offers a variety of health related services.

The nursing department is also responsible for the management and day to day operations of five Intermediate Care Facilities/ Medical Residential Homes. All of the individuals served within these homes require a significant amount of health related support to be able to have opportunities and choices regarding the lives they want to lead. The primary goal is to be proactive and provide as much preventive health maintenance as necessary to sustain a high quality of life for each service recipient. Thorough and frequent health assessments are part of a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week routine. The sharp assessment skills of Michael Dunn Center's health professionals have proven to be invaluable in maintaining an overall high quality of life for each individual served by our nursing department.

Despite the commitment to excellence and the compassionate care shown by our nursing staff, there are unmet needs that would increase the quality of care provided to the recipients of service.

• Currently, a clinic provided for service recipients at Michael Dunn Center's main campus is currently provided in the school cafeteria due to lack of space.
  
• Equipment utilized for clinic use is old and dated.
  
• Vehicles used for transport at Medical Residential facilities are old and in need of replacement.
  

Funding for services is very limited, which provides little opportunity for improving these circumstances. Without help, there is also little hope that these issues can be resolved.
